Speedy’s Softer Side: A Hospitality Case Study


Speedy Freight has long enjoyed its position as an exceptional retail courier, transporting goods from all corners of the United Kingdom to their final destinations. Speedy has an enviable reputation as an excellent regional distributor, moving goods in bulk from their national distribution hubs to individual regional or local hubs across the country. This case was no exception, when Speedy Freight was tasked with moving thousands of individual items of soft furnishings across the UK.


The Client 

Speedy was contacted by a well-known hotel chain with hundreds of posts across the United Kingdom, for support in transporting thousands and thousands of – pillows! Speedy Freight needed to time this delivery perfectly, so that thousands of guests could enjoy a well-earned rest on premium, soft pillows – transported across many miles. 


The Challenges  

The sheer volume of this consignment posed a real challenge to the team. Not only were thousands of pillows required to be transported, the import of the pillows into the country posed another risk – delays out of the team’s hands, which would impact on our delivery. With these in mind, the team set to work.


The Consignment

425,000 pillows, 1600 deliveries (and collections), 800 hotels to be covered, and in excess of 20,000 miles to be covered, spanning the entire mainland of the UK. From conception right through to the final pillow, this project would see Speedy Freight managing  the whole distribution operation through 6 regional hubs. Speedy Freight was responsible for managing the stock levels on each site and reacted immediately where necessary when stock was delayed arriving into the UK.


The Conclusion 

The logistics team received the final instructions on the Thursday afternoon before the Easter Bank holiday weekend. They had the full proposal (including costings, delivery date and time for each hotel) back to the hotel by 09.00 on the Tuesday morning, ready to go live later that week. There were hurdles along the way (due to delayed manufacture of the product) but, as a driving service, Speedy Freight is always prepared for bumps in the road! The team at Speedy Freight showed their flexibility by managing the delay situation and re-planning the hotels, to coincide with the arrival of the pillows into the UK.

With the goods delivered on time and in budget, this project was another great success demonstrating the flexibility of the services we at Speedy Freight have to offer.
