Our Top Ways to Prep Your Haulage for Pickup and Delivery

Here at Speedy Freight, we know that preparing your haulage for pickup and delivery looks different for everyone. The process of shipping consignments smoothly, whether nationally or internationally, relies on a few key factors. Checking documentation is essential for international consignments, while clear communication and prioritising safety protocol are essential aspects of preparing all haulage for pickup and delivery. There is a different set of rules that must be adhered to depending on whether you are just looking to move consignments via courier across the UK or looking to move goods between UK and the EU with international haulage.

Thanks to our experience providing international haulage to companies all across the UK and within the EU, our teams here Speedy Freight have put together a few tips for preparing your haulage for its journey.

  1. Check Your Goods Classification

Knowing your goods classification is an essential part of all haulage preparation. Particularly important where the goods may be abnormally sized, require special handling or for international consignments, goods classification determines how items must be stored, packaged and transported via courier service. This is important to determine both that the goods can be moved in the correct vehicle as well as to ensure that the correct documentation is in place.

How your goods are classified depends on the nature or material of the item that is to be shipped.  Goods classification varies from country to country, but there are simple ways that you can check your goods classification online

  1. Package Items Properly!

When it comes to moving your items, it’s fair to say that you don’t want to cut any corners. Investing in the correct packaging materials is an essential part of preparing your goods for haulage. Though some couriers can package your items for you; other couriers in the UK will require you to have packaged your own goods in alignment with the UK’s regulations based on your goods classification.

Common packaging materials required for both national and international haulage involve cushioning for your items as protection, as well as a secure outer ‘shell’ for your consignment. Items should be packaged individually, too – as if packaged together they could be at risk of breaking, cracking or otherwise damaging one another.

When it comes to larger, bulk or abnormal loads, we appreciate that packaging items correctly is more complex. Under these scenarios, your local branch will work with you to understand how to safely transport your goods. Good goods will be loaded and strapped with care.

  1. Documentation

Finally, documentation is one of the most important parts of arranging your haulage. Ensuring that your consignments have the correct documentation in place early on will help you to avoid any obstacles when it comes to receiving the goods – or transporting them!

When it comes to international haulage services, and consignments travelling between the UK and the EU, it’s essential to make sure that you’ve considered and completed the requisite documentation and customs clearance required by your country of origin and country of destination.  See our Brexit FAQ pages and our Import and Export pages for more information on the necessary commodity codes, documents and customs clearance required to move goods between the UK and the EU.
