Speedy Freight sponsors local boxing hero Atif Shafiq

APRIL 2019Manchester-based Speedy Freight has sponsored the former Under-16 British Boxing Champion Atif Shafiq to help his bid to become British Lightweight Champion by the end of 2019.

The Stockport and Manchester franchises of national courier specialist Speedy Freight have joined forces to provide funds for Atif’s dietary needs, kit and training expenses. Atif trains at Moss Side’s Champs Camp.

Speedy Freight MD Mike Smith says the attraction of Atif for the brand was immediate and powerful. “Our business is all about doing what others can’t, about ensuring success where others have failed. In many ways a boxer like Atif epitomises that mixture of strategy and sheer resilience which we feel we also bring to our work.”

Rotherham-born Atif became Under 16 champion at just 13 years old, and turned professional at 18. He won his recent match at the Magna Centre against Eligio Palacios from Nicaragua over six rounds to move his pro record to 20-2.

Atif aspires to become Commonwealth and World Lightweight Champion within the next two years.

The Speedy Freight sponsorship strengthens an already powerful team around Atif, including his manager Dave Coldwell, a former British boxer and elite boxing trainer; his head coach Haroon Headley, who runs the Heavy Hitters company; and his assistant manager Dan Murray.

Speedy Freight specialises in urgent or sensitive freight transport, whether that’s delivering the essential part to fix a grounded aeroplane or a legal document which must get to court. Smith says the essential qualities for the Speedy Freight network are agility, discipline and absolute determination – and these are qualities Atif has in abundance.

Smith says:  “We’re proud to support Atif’s journey. However, this is about more than sport and more than just our company. The logistics sector as a whole needs to attract young people from many different backgrounds to ensure we have the skills we need for the future. We see this sponsorship as a way of underlining our commitment to our youth and to diversity.

“As for Atif, who started training when he was just 10 years old, a local boxing club can be a positive influence for many adolescents. Atif is an excellent role model for young people and we’d like to applaud that.”

Atif says: “The help and support from Speedy Freight means the world to me as it takes off some of the pressure and allows me focus more on my boxing training. It will also allow me to cut down my working hours so that I can rest at weekends, and that will help me to perform at a higher level during weekday training.”

Speedy Freight has nearly 60 depots around the UK and manages critical deliveries for everyone from major retailers such as Argos to local businesses. When it simply has to get there as soon as possible, UK PLC calls Speedy Freight. The company will field full-weight artics or small vans, demanding on the needs of the job.

“Like Atif, we are used to punching well above our weight,” says Smith. “We also train to be the best, which is why so many UK businesses, including blue-chip companies, household names and SMEs rely on us.”
