It is tempting to describe September to December as one universal “peak season”, but the reality is more nuanced. For some retailers and eCommerce businesses, the run-up to Christmas creates a significant increase in demand. For manufacturers, food and beverage businesses, logistics providers, construction companies and event businesses, the pressures can be driven by very different factors, from production schedules and customer deadlines to projects, contracts and seasonal activity.
What all of our customers across these industries have in common is not necessarily a peak in demand, it’s the need to keep their operation moving when the unexpected happens and something changes.
None of these situations necessarily means a logistics operation has been poorly planned. They are simply the realities of running a busy and dynamic business.
A missed collection can create a knock-on effect elsewhere in the schedule. A vehicle that becomes unavailable can leave other drivers and resources under additional pressure. A supplier delay can suddenly turn a routine delivery into a time-critical requirement.
During a quieter period or season, you may have time to recover. As the final quarter of the year progresses and deadlines become tighter, there can be much less room to absorb an unexpected problem.
When something falls outside the plan, the answer is not necessarily to replace the logistics operation you already have.
In our experience, and what our customers find is the most useful solution, is simply to have access to additional capability when the normal operation is stretched. That might mean supporting an in-house fleet when vehicles or drivers are unavailable. It could mean helping an existing transport or logistics provider deal with overflow when they cannot take on another job they are experiencing similar operational challenges. Or it could mean having somewhere to turn when an urgent requirement appears outside the pre-planned delivery schedule for that day.
Speedy Freight supports customers across multiple sectors, some with existing logistics arrangements, and in this situation, provides additional capacity when it is needed before scaling back when it is not.
We don’t insist on having a contract in place, so businesses can use Speedy Freight as flexible additional support. That means a business can use the service for a single urgent delivery, a short-term capacity issue, a period of increased workload or an unexpected problem without having to build a new permanent logistics arrangement around it.
It also means Speedy Freight can complement an existing logistics provider rather than compete with or replace them. When a regular provider cannot help with an additional requirement, Speedy Freight can provide that all important extra option without disrupting the existing arrangements.
The requirement will be different from business to business. Sometimes the priority is simply getting an urgent consignment delivered on that day or within a very tight delivery window. In other situations, the requirement may be more complex.
With an extensive branch network that understands local nuances and as well as providing a service at scale across the UK and Ireland, Speedy Freight is able to respond to practically every scenario, every vehicle type required, from moving small, high value items such as precision engineered Formula 1 parts to transporting disassembled Boeing 747s, there is not much we haven’t transported for our customers.
In our experience, the strongest logistics plans do not try to predict every possible problem or mitigate every potential risk. They accept the operation will come under pressure and have a practical, contingency focused response when it does.
That could mean knowing who can provide an additional vehicle at short notice, who can move a time-critical consignment outside the normal network, or who can help when an existing logistics provider has reached its available capacity.
The final months of the year do not require businesses to abandon the plans they have already made. they require them to be ready to respond when reality inevitably moves beyond those plans.
This is where Speedy Freight provides that extra layer of critical support, working alongside your existing operation or logistics provider, when and where you need it. No long-term contract. No requirement to change your whole logistics model. Just experienced logistics support when something needs to move.
You’ve planned for everything in the final months of the year. We’re ready for anything.
