The Client
The client is an established aviation services company providing complete “nose-to-tail” care for commercial aircraft. Their specialist services include aircraft maintenance, storage, parking and disassembly for airlines and aircraft leasing companies. They have been a regular Speedy Freight customer for over 2 years, with the relationship built on reliable, responsive and well-organised logistics support.
The Consignment
Speedy Freight Teesside was asked to coordinate the transportation of two disassembled Boeing 747 aircraft that had been in storage for more than five years.
The aircraft components had been dismantled and packaged onto crates and pallets, with the goods requiring significant amounts of space due to their size and unusual dimensions. As the stored aircraft components were taking up valuable space, the client needed a reliable logistics partner to transport the goods to a new location.
Given the size and volume of the consignment, this was a substantial transportation project requiring careful planning and ongoing coordination rather than a single delivery.
The Solution
Speedy Freight Teesside provided a dedicated Full Truck Load (FTL) solution, using a combination of 4 flatbed vehicles and 16 articulated curtain-sided vehicles to transport the aircraft components.
Before transportation began, an initial site inspection was carried out to assess the volume and dimensions of the goods and establish how many vehicles would be required. This allowed the team to develop a clear transportation plan and ensure the appropriate vehicles were available.
As the project progressed, further site visits were conducted every two days to assess what goods remained and adjust the vehicle requirements accordingly. This flexible approach meant vehicles could be booked based on the actual progress of the project, rather than relying solely on the original estimates.
Coordinated Daily Deliveries
To keep the operation running smoothly, two vehicles were loaded each day, with the goods delivered the following morning.
Careful consideration was given to the delivery schedule to avoid creating a bottleneck at the destination. With such a large volume of aircraft components being moved, delivering too many vehicles at once could have created challenges at the receiving site. By staggering the deliveries, Speedy Freight ensured a steady and manageable flow of goods.
Managing Oversized Goods
One of the main challenges of the project was the dimensions of the aircraft components. Some of the goods were particularly long and wide, requiring careful consideration when selecting suitable vehicles and planning their transportation.
The combination of flatbeds and articulated curtain-sided vehicles provided the flexibility required to accommodate the different types and sizes of aircraft components, while the ongoing site inspections allowed the transport plan to be adapted as the project progressed.
Communication and Coordination
Daily communication between all parties was central to the success of the operation. With multiple vehicles, regular loading and scheduled deliveries taking place throughout the project, maintaining clear communication was essential.
