Meet Hope: Indoor Sales & Customer Service Advisor
As part of National Apprenticeship Week, we want to highlight the journey of one of our apprentices, Hope Chorlton, who works as an Indoor Sales & Customer Service Advisor at our Doncaster, York, and Leeds branches. Hope has been with Speedy Freight for some time, and her experience perfectly showcases how apprenticeships can transform careers and drive business success.
1. What Inspired You to Start an Apprenticeship with Speedy Freight?
I had completed an apprenticeship in hairdressing, but I realised it wasn’t the right fit for me long-term. I wanted to find something more office-based, and when I saw the opportunity at Speedy Freight, I knew it was a perfect match.
2. What Key Skills and Knowledge Have You Gained So Far?
My telephone skills and the ability to work under pressure have improved immensely due to the fast-paced nature of the job. Handling multiple tasks and communicating effectively with customers has been a huge learning curve, and I’m continuously growing in these areas.
3. Can You Share a Challenge You’ve Faced and How You Handled It?
We recently had a vehicle breakdown midway through a job. I had to quickly find a replacement vehicle, organise for it to meet up with the original driver, and ensure the goods were transferred – all while keeping the customer updated. It was definitely a challenge, but I stayed calm, kept my communication clear, and ensured the customer was happy with the solution.
4. How Has the Apprenticeship Prepared You for the Future?
I've gained a much deeper understanding of the sales process and the factors that influence a customer’s decision to buy. It’s been invaluable in preparing me for the future, as I now feel much more confident in my role and know exactly what I need to do to succeed.
5. What Advice Would You Give to Someone Considering an Apprenticeship?
Be prepared to work hard and learn something new every day. It’s not always easy, but it’s incredibly rewarding when you see how much you grow and improve.

I was working in a job where I couldn’t see a future for myself, but I knew I had an interest in marketing from my past experiences. I wanted to make a career change, but without any prior experience and not being in a position to return to education, an apprenticeship felt like the perfect opportunity. During the interview process, I immediately knew that Speedy Freight was the right choice for me.
2. What Key Skills and Knowledge Have You Gained So Far?
I’ve gained valuable technical skills and knowledge across various digital marketing channels and tools, including SEO, Google Ads, Google Analytics, and more. Alongside this, I’ve developed important core skills like writing, researching, and reporting. Additionally, I’ve gained great insight into the logistics industry and a deeper understanding of how a business like Speedy Freight operates.
3. Can You Share a Challenge You’ve Faced and How You Handled It?
Working in a small marketing team for a large company often involves juggling multiple projects at once, which can be quite demanding. Combining this with coursework, it can feel overwhelming at times, but I’ve now developed systems and strategies to manage my time more effectively. By staying organised and focusing on efficiency and prioritisation, I’ve successfully overcome the challenges of managing such a busy workload.
4. How Has the Apprenticeship Prepared You for the Future?
My apprenticeship has given me the skills, knowledge, and experience to confidently build my career and continue growing in the future. The work I did before felt more like a job than a career, but now I feel empowered to shape my future into whatever I want it to be. The balance of learning marketing theories and principles during my apprenticeship days and applying them through practical work in my day-to-day role has provided me with a strong foundation of skills, knowledge, and understanding in the field.
5. What Advice Would You Give to Someone Considering an Apprenticeship?
I’d say go for it! Whether you’re fresh out of school or a bit older like me and looking for a career change, an apprenticeship is a great option. It’s the perfect way to kickstart your career, giving you a qualification, valuable knowledge, and real-world experience all at once.

I've improved my time management, negotiation skills, and proficiency with Excel spreadsheets. Managing my workload effectively has also been a key learning point.

At first, I struggled with answering some customer queries. When I encountered a question I didn’t know how to respond to, I sought guidance from my colleagues and applied their advice in future conversations.

Go for it! It’s great for your CV and will be massively beneficial in the future when applying for jobs, as most employers now seek candidates with experience. It also prepares you well for working life.
